Hello Wellington Hackers!

It would be a great shame if the many half-started pet projects of this city failed to get the love they deserved because of real priorities. To that end, I think a new Super Happy Dev House is in order! We'll meet at the usual spot, Southern Cross, on Sunday 7 March at around noon. Bring along your own ideas, or just come to see what others have started.

Hope to see you all there!

Cheers, Evan

Software Freedom Day 2009

2009-09-20 - Wellington Town Hall.

http://softwarefreedomday.org.nz/

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). The principles behind FOSS are underpinned by the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software.

The Software Freedom Day hackfest is hosted by SuperHappyDevHouse, One Laptop Per Child, and DigitalNZ - a chance to put the DigitalNZ APIs into action! Come hang out all day on our sofas, drink large amounts of coffee and work on your favourite piece of free and open source software. You can also learn about the work of the amazing team from One Laptop Per Child who will be showcasing their machines, and participate by helping to test them.

You need to register for this event at http://softwarefreedomday.org.nz/

Maker Fest

Wellington has a growing community of makers who share a lot of the same principles as FOSS, using open source technology to create craft, sharing tools and skills when working on solutions to technical projects.

We will have a room set aside at Software Freedom DAy for makers, so come along and showcase your creations, whether they are gadgets or open source crafts, or work on something you've been dreaming up for months. Attendees will be expected to supply their own materials and tools.

You need to register for this event at http://softwarefreedomday.org.nz/

OLPC Weekly TestFest

meets every Saturday at the Southern Cross

The Wellington Testers is a group that gets together each Saturday mid-morning at a cafe (currently Southern Cross) to drink coffee and test-drive the latest version of the software for the XO.

We keep notes of the things we try, of the things that work well, and of the bugs we find. We post the notes to the development list, including all the things that did work (this makes programmers happy, after all, most of them are volunteers). For the bugs, we try our best to find steps to reproduce, and diagnose them.

Who are we? Curious kids of various ages - some of us are involved in education, others in technology.

Come join us

To hear about our events, subscribe: http://lists.laptop.org/listinfo/olpc-nz

To join in the testing action, you can find us in New Zealand's capital, Wellington, testing at Southern Cross, 35 Abel Smith Street on Saturdays from 10.30am/11.00am until our fingers don't work anymore. For more details contact tabitha.roder@gmail.com

Super Happy Dev House March

Super Happy Dev House Aotearoa has invited SilverStripe to hold a hackfest themed around their SilverStripe open source CMS and MVC framework

Sunday 1st March 2009, from 1pm until we get sleepy. Southern Cross http://thecross.co.nz

SilverStripers will share how to work with, and contribute to the software.

You can bring your own todo list, closedsource or opensource - or turn up and find someone to collaborate with. Spend your Sunday afternoon with fellow hackers writing code, submitting patches and testing builds.

Be prepared to buy your own lunch, coffee, and wifi traffic (day passes are $10, and clever geeks will work out how to make a single day pass go a long way).

Feel free to put your name on March 2009 Projects page.

what

SuperHappyDevHouse Aotearoa is a monthly hackathon, combining serious and not-so-serious productivity with a fun and exciting party atmosphere.

The whole thing is about rapid development, ad-hoc collaboration and cross pollination. Hardcore coders, l33t hax0r, passionate designers, and other types that enjoy software and technology development are welcome. If this sounds like fun to you, then you're one of us.

So, join us! Order some a brunch and coffee, dhcp into wifi and tag your commits with SHDH. Meet fellow geeks, scheme and come up with world changing creations, while consuming beer, milkshakes, cookies.

You will need to bring your own laptop.

This serves 3 purposes,

  • It might help you focus and assess what you got out of the dev house party
  • You can find collaborators
